The first two thirds of this book are devoted to carving patterns, particularly of use to a beginning carver, but with sufficiently increasing complexity to be of challenge as a carver's skill increases. Numerous borders are illustrated as well as inset designs that might be used on panels. The last third of the book (which was originally a separate book) focuses on combining pyrography with carving in the Flemish style. The combination of pyrography and carving may seem curious at first glance, but the pyrography permits detail that would be difficult to achieve with carving alone. Both portions of the book are useful for the extensive patterns and possibilities they illustrate. The emphasis is very much on illustration rather than technique. |
